Leadership development opportunities are critical to building an effective leadership cadre in an organization. Leader success is a product of a number of factors. Individual characteristics and competencies comprise leader readiness, which in turn influences how leaders perform in their roles, as well as individual and organizational outcomes. Therefore, the first step in leadership development is to assess current and potential leaders. Understanding the strengths and developmental needs of the organization’s leadership cadre is critical to effectively address leadership development needs.

Leadership assessment allows an understanding of individual characteristics, motivation, and level of competency development. Leadership assessments take many forms, including personality tests, assessment centers or simulations, 360 assessments, leadership style inventories, etc. However, the quality of leadership assessments varies. It is imperative that organizational personnel involved in leadership development are able to evaluate and identify the most appropriate assessments to gauge leader readiness and bench strength in their organization. During this workshop, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM’s) personnel psychologists will use OPM’s leadership framework to discuss how assessment can promote development, factors to consider when incorporating assessments into leadership development efforts, and how to evaluate and select the most appropriate and effective assessments for your organization.
